A REVIEW OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STUDIO-BASED LEARNING FOR KEYBOARDING SKILL ACQUISITION

Abstract

Keyboarding is a skill that is much desired the world over in view of its value. Some computer laptops, table tops, handsets and other communication technology tools may not accept or transmit data without the use of keyboards. This paper reviews the concepts of keyboarding, studio-based learning, teachers and students role as well as facilities required for teaching keyboarding in studio based learning and how it could be used. . It observes that most students fail Keyboarding as a result of inability of teachers to attend to students individually owing to the large number of students admitted to keyboarding classes, hence teachers result to using large halls using lecture method of teaching. This paper found studio learning as a credible alternative that presents learning in an environment friendly and more content driven way and also prescribes standard required in a standard studio based setting. This paper concludes that when studio based learning method is used, it provides a dynamic and integrated learning environment that emphasizes personal and intellectual development in higher order thinking skills and helps to develop good habit of the mind and skills needed to be a successful life-long learners. It was recommended among others that studio based learning should be used to teach keyboarding in colleges of education, and that necessary tools and equipment should be provided in keyboarding studios to enhance learning.
