ROLES OF EDUCATIONAL MANAGERS IN UTILIZATION AND MAINTENANCE OF PHYSICAL RESOURCES

The paper discussed the significance of physical resource, utilization and maintenance to the attainment of educational goals. It explained that resources generally are very essential inputs into the teaching and learning process. Physical resources on the other hand include school buildings, laboratories, classrooms, libraries, typing pools, examination halls among others that are required for quality educational services. The extent or level that is the frequency of the use of physical facilities is referred to as utilization. The paper submits that facilities could be underutilized or over utilized. However, effective utilization is a function of how the facilities are maintained for sustainable performance of the purpose for which they are provided in educational services. The paper also posited that majority of the schools and colleges find it difficult to actualize the educational objectives partly because there are no physical facilities or the available ones are poorly maintained. The paper therefore called on school managers to rise up to such challenge. It therefore recommendeds that educational managers should institutionalize facilities maintenance culture in the school; provide adequate security for some of the facilities, carry out routine inspection on the available facilities and should adopt committee system approach to facilities maintenance.
