OSTEOPOROSIS AND DIET MANAGEMENT

Globally, one major contemporary rising health concern amongst older adults of all races and nationalities is the issue of Osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is an insidious disease of the bone which leads to loss of bone mass density (BMD) over time, thereby increasing the chances of a fracture amongst the aged and the pregnant women in the society as they are naturally predisposed to it if ever they should slip and fall. The World Health Organization (WHO) posited that: “men over 50 years are more likely to have an Osteoporosis-induced bone break than to get prostate cancer; why women over the age of 50 years or postmenopausal women have the greatest risk of developing the disease.” The severe morbidities and associated fragility fractures amongst the elderly causes a huge impact, financial and social, on the health of a society. Thus there is a need for awareness to be created concerning the disease. This study examined the causes of Osteoporosis as well as its: diagnosis, symptoms, those at risk of developing the disease, life-style and dietary measures in the management of the health challenge. Based on the conclusion, it was recommended that, pregnant women should make conscious effort at consuming healthy foods rich calcium and other body vital nutrients. Similar recommendation was extended to the aged male folk. Besides nutrition, regular bodily exercise couple with a healthy life-style living was also proposed.
